In 1980 the Resource Centre for the Arts / LSPU Hall presented a play on the Portuguese fishery on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland entitled Terras de Bacalhau.

We (Kent Barrett and Manfred Buchheit) as artists associated with the Hall, decided to create an impromptu exhibition of portraits of the fishermen on board several boats in port by using the SX-70 camera. Our thought was that we could create an exhibition relevant to the theatre production immediately and have it up during the run of the play.

To effect this, we went down to the harbour, where the ships were anchored, and asked sailors if we could photograph them. We offered each an SX-70 print  if they agreed, and many took us up on the offer. They were very cooperative, even permitting us on board, and enjoyed being photographed. We hope some of them still have the original prints we gave them. A second photo was kept for our project, and these were the ones exhibited in 1980 at the Hall…

Between 1980 and now, these original prints had been stored away, and basically forgotten about until earlier this year when Manfred rediscovered them while sorting through his voluminous collection.

NFB Hothouse 6: Call for Submissions

Deadline: February 19, 2010

Program Dates: April 05 – June 25, 2010

Theme: Inside Out

Tell it in a minute. Do it in 3 months. Make it Stereoscopic 3D.

The National Film Board of Canada seeks submissions from emerging filmmakers (young and not-so-young), and artists intrigued by animation art, for the 6th edition of Hothouse, a 12-weekpaid apprenticeship in full-on, all-inclusive, real-world animation filmmaking.

A new dimension this year — and a giant experiment — Hothouse 6 will be produced in stereoscopic 3D!. No need to dust off your red and blue glasses or script elaborate face-poking scenes; this is about using space as an essential story device and expressive tool (intimacy, fantasy, paradox, etc).

Hothouse is about making animation faster and more flexibly, embracing animation’s many possibilities while maintaining creative and technical excellence. We’re looking for six new talents who are willing and able to jump head-first into this intensive, immersive experience.

Submission Criteria:

Submissions must be received by 5pm (Montreal time) on Friday February 19 and must be sent via email or post. The six successful candidates will be notified on Friday February 26.

On January 9th visit Eastern Edge Gallery for the first exhibitions of 2010! The Suitcase Art Gallery Space Research Institute (SAGSRI) launches its newest project. Newly opened, the St. John’s branch of SAGRSI will host an installation of the mission’s work to date - its continuing struggle to compete in the ’space race’ - and share their story of exploration and its affects on both the traveler and the environment they visit.
Michael McCormack is an interdisciplinary artist and art practitioner. He was the creator and custodian of the McCleave Gallery of Fine Art since 2002, until the suitcase gallery merged with SAGSRI in 2007. After several years of extensive traveling, Michael has returned to Halifax where he works as a representative of SAGSRI Maritimes, and as Director of Eyelevel Gallery.

In conjunction with the space mission, Jason Penney presents survival packs for drag queens and queers post-apocalypse in his exhibition Afterblast. After all the end of the world is near. Each purse contains a home adorned with found objects and reclaimed materials. A man climbing a bleak hill of debris, dressed for the future in discarded fashion co-inhabits the space. A look forward into a past future. Also presented Penney’s automata sculpture featuring a cast of trash inspired characters, who, infused with a new mythology find themselves in a darkened alley compulsively performing and exploring each other. Jason Penney is originally from St. John’s and is currently completing a MFA at Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland.
